Nexus 4 further shipping delays but Google set to improve

Since the release of the much-awaited Google Nexus 4 made by LG, the saga of supplies not meeting demand has escalated almost daily. Although it has been a smash-hit there have been rumblings of discontent over the way Google has handled online sales after it sold out almost instantly. Today we hear that Nexus 4 shipping dates have been further delayed but there’s also news that Google is set to improve its online shopping experience by acquiring a delivery startup.

This pure vanilla Android smartphone running the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system (now upgradable to 4.2.1) was always going to be popular and we have posted several times now about the difficulties in ordering and delayed shipping as demand continues to outstrip supply. Stock of the Nexus 4 on the first day of online sales with Google Play sold remarkably quickly without even leaving customers an option to order one for delivery at a later date. A few days ago new stock went on sale through Google Play but the system was at first overwhelmed and very quickly dates for shipping were pushed back several weeks.
You could say that those in the US were fortunate though, as at least they are still able to order the 8GB or 16GB versions through Google Play for later delivery, even if that’s some weeks away. However those trying to order in the UK are still met with a message saying ‘sold out’ and to check back soon with no order option available at all. The day after sales resumed in the US the shipping time for the 8GB Nexus 4 was already 8 to 9 weeks, while the 16GB Nexus 4 had a shipping time of between 4 and 5 weeks, thus putting Christmas availability out of the frame.
Looking at the status of the Nexus 4 in the US Google Play Store today reveals that the shipping time of the 16GB Nexus 4 has now been pushed back further to between 6 and 7 weeks, according to Droid-Life. This is only 3 days since it was showing at 4 to 5 weeks, so more doom and gloom for potential customers. Both the 8GB or 16GB versions of the Nexus 4 look now to be out of reach until 2013 and if you order over the next days or weeks that time is likely to be pushed back even further, going by current ordering experience.

Maybe these supply woes have inspired Google to begin beefing up its online order and delivery system though as we also hear that Google has just acquired a startup company. Canada-based BufferBox is a locker and storage company that allows customers to pick up parcels at a time and place that suits them. BufferBox can supply Amazon customers, with a Bufferbox address instead of a home or work address for delivery and then will email the customer to tell them when the shipment can be collected. The customer then simply uses a dedicated PIN to go to the locker and pick up the item. Presumably if Google has purchased BufferBox then the locker company will soon be providing this service to Google Play Store customers too.
An article on Pop Herald points out that currently Google is selling the Nexus 4 phone as well as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets online and that its online service could be made more flexible and speedy by using BufferBox. In the case of the Nexus 4 though we’d say that the sheer shortage of stock is what has caused the problem rather than the order and delivery system though the acquisition of BufferBox could enhance future product launches. However Pop Herald does make a good point when it says that Google could be about to expand its online ordering goods.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour v1.0.0 Apk + Data Android

The usual variations of virtual control options should be available when the game ships, too, though I was quite adept with the default setup. There's also support for gyroscope aiming, though I've never been able to get very comfortable with that sort of thing, and I'd imagine support for Gameloft's sort of strange Duo Gamer controller will be in there as well.

As is typical with games like this, the opening scene of Modern Combat 4 is incredibly intense and wastes no time throwing you right into the thick of things. Reminiscent of storming the beaches at Normandy in the famous scene from 'Saving Private Ryan', you and your squad will arrive via boat to the beaches of Hawaii with all manner of hell breaking loose around you. You'll then follow your squad commander as he leads you inland and through both indoor and outdoor environments picking off enemies as they come. There are various objectives to complete along the way before finally arriving at an extraction point which signals the end of the level.

The gunplay in Modern Combat 4 is satisfying. Enemies displayed intelligence as they utilized cover, split up to try and flank your group, and were generally aware of when it's a bad time to be out in the open. The combat scenarios still had that kind of mechanical feel which is typical of these games – progress a bit through the level, wipe out a group of baddies, progress a bit further, run into more baddies, and so on – but a smarter enemy AI and the use of the Havok physics engine for enemy death animations creates more of a natural vibe. Enemies will instantly go ragdoll once killed, creating some interesting death animations, and they appear to utilize their skills in different ways each time you play. I ran through the same section of the first mission twice, and it felt different enough each time that it helped eliminate the cookie-cutter feeling that these scripted sort of events can sometimes create.

Another welcome aspect of the game, and one that's often used in previous Modern Combat games and other similar titles, is breaking up the gunplay in various interesting ways. For example, at one point I encountered a quick-time event where I had to defend a knife attack with swipes. Another time I was able to remotely control a miniature tank as it forged its way ahead of our squad, allowing me to lay waste to as many bad guys as I could using its turret in order to clear the path ahead. Similarly, at one point I hopped in the back of a military jeep and manned its turret, being speedily swept through an on-rails section where I got to – you guessed it – blast away at more bad guys. These sections were fun and definitely offer a nice change of pace from the regular shooting.

Galaxy Nexus on Verizon sadly lagging behind in Jelly Bean updates

At Phones Review we try to keep readers informed about the latest operating system updates for their devices and although some manufacturers and carriers manage to push out updates fairly quickly, sadly that can’t be said for all. One case in point is the sad tale of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, still playing catch up with other Nexus devices when in fact one of the joys of owning a pure Android Nexus device is that it should always be one of the first to get the latest official OS updates.

This may be one reason why Google’s latest Nexus smartphone, the LG Nexus 4, is not tied to a carrier as the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon is rather a sorry tale and shows what can go wrong when updates have to go through a carrier approval process. The Galaxy Nexus was released on Verizon last November running Android 4.0 ICS and in June this year 4.1 Jelly Bean was announced. By July the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus variant was receiving the 4.1 Jelly Bean update but it took a further two months for the LTE Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean build to be approved by Verizon, even though other non-carrier Nexus devices received 4.1 Jelly Bean much earlier.
Since then there has been more of the same. Non-carrier Nexus devices have now received 4.1.2 and then the 4.2 update was also announced and rolled out before minor update 4.2.1 arrived. Meanwhile the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon remains firmly stuck on 4.1.1, three updates back, with no leaks of new builds. It seems as though Verizon is the stumbling block as Droid-Life helpfully outlines the update process. With non-carrier Nexus devices, Google only has two easy steps to complete, firstly to approve the software for the device and then to push out the update to that device.

However the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon is a more complicated example of the update process. In this instance Google comes up with the update, which is then sent to Verizon for approval. As you can imagine, this may simply be added to a rather large pile of pending updates with the fact that it’s a Google Nexus device not gaining it any advantage in being speedily dealt with. At some point Verizon then approves the update and then Google can finally make it available for that device. In some cases Verizon may deny the update meaning the whole process starts all over again.
Thus the saga of OS update catch-ups for the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon goes on and we can understand the frustration that many Galaxy Nexus owners will be feeling, especially given the fact that it’s a Nexus device that you’d think would be above these complications. The lesson to be learned here is the valuable advantage of a non-carrier Nexus phone or tablet but that won’t help Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners right now.
We’d be really interested to hear your thoughts on the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and how it trails behind other Nexus devices in receiving the latest OS updates? Are you one of those still waiting for Jelly Bean for your Galaxy Nexus? Let us have your comments on this.
